Why do people "ruin" good furniture?

I don't understand. If it's beat up and falling apart and you want to fix it back up, fine, have at it. But when it's beautiful and vintage and just needs a little polishing, why oh WHY would you ruin a fine piece and turn it into something boring like a mass produced piece from IKEA?

Case in point:  http://ashadeofteal.com/beforeafter-tall-dresser/

This so called designer took this beautiful vintage dresser with curly maple wood and metal detailing and totally ruined it. She can't even paint well. Makes me ill. I'd only buy it just to strip all that crap back off and try to restore it to it's original beauty.
